Some of the work on display had come in the form of gifts or barters, and had already found a place for themselves in the house. Other work was identified according to available spaces, while some were created especially for the show. In borrowing from the popular idiom, ‘Where the Heart Is’ opens this home as a space with a range of possibilities for interventions and for coming together. <img width="4866" height="3077" These are real people’s views, suggestions, admonishments of reports on real crimes. We now allow unprecedented levels of vitriol into our homes through the medium of online comments. The rise of comments sections as addendums to journalistic writing has been both the new height of the demotic voice of “the people” and a troubling reflection of citizenship. Behind a society that appears to be civil in its day-to-day interactions lurks the id of humanity’s most brutish, primal urges. Or so the comments would lead us to think. She took an indefinite sabbatical from her job and the newly opened Home Sweet Home to be in Ahmedabad with her family. Home Sweet Home traveled with her and found a collaborator in Orande Mensink. Bandish Soparkar, Chinar’s close friend from high school, offered his home to host the exhibition where Chinar’s alma maters NID and UCA came together. Being home meant many things for everyone in the exhibition: the exchange students from London who made Ahmedabad/Gandhinagar their home for a few months; NID students, who made NID their home for the duration of their studies; Chinar, who was born and brought up in Ahmedabad, had to make it her home again for her ailing father. The exhibition is organized jointly by Leslie Johnson, Chinar Shah, and Nihaal Faizal during the first month of the Kochi Muziris Biennale and will take place over 3 weeks inside a rented apartment in Fort Cochin. Set against the historically evolving model of the home-as-gallery, the work on display will initiate dialogue with regard to the home as both physical site and conceptual idea. Featuring artworks reflecting on themes such as identity, family, aspiration, and technology, brought together within the space of the home, the exhibition will also include presentations, interventions, screenings, and multiple dinner parties that further this discussion around the home. A two-channel video by Eva Koch concerns the remembrance of a family member, while Chinar Shah explores the right to be forgotten through trophies and certificates. Famous Artist hypothesizes the need for an ‘aspiration decompression room’ within our homes, while Nihaal Faizal re-photographs the desktop backgrounds on his home computer. Franco Leidi’s engravings reflect on the artist’s engagements inside his room or studio while Leslie Johnson’s sculpture outside the apartment appropriates the ubiquitous ‘Beware of the Dog’ sign. Irene Westholm’s monoprints reflect on images of the home as found in consumer catalogs, while her video reconstructs an exterior view of an apartment building. For the duration of the exhibition, one bedroom in the apartment will host a shop for artists’ multiples and selected publications. Available in the shop will be a variety of objects including serigraphs by Prabhakar Pachpute, postcards by Nihaal Faizal, photography books by Moakshaa Vohra, cushion covers by Famous Artist, coloring pads by Tara Kelton, zines by Renuka Rajiv, and jigsaw puzzles by Ragini Bhow. Publications available will include ‘Making Space for Art’ published by 1Shanthiroad, ‘Silicon Plateau Vol.1’ published by T-A-J, and ‘Honey, I’m Home’ published by the Royal College of Art. <img (Thank you Wikipedia.) Mostly women crocheted doilies as a pastime, but as fashions in handcraft changed, so went the doily. One can draw a parallel to rangoli and traditional pattern making where one starts with a point and develops an intricate pattern with no plan. Patterns need not repeat themselves, and thus the room takes on a new aspect with complex patterns covering and personalizing scratched furniture. Doilies were also used to humanize appliances as technology was introduced into the home. Photos of doilies on toasters, televisions, and water heaters look like a form of exorcism. Another work chronicles the relationship dramas of some figurines. The figurines are arranged as a storyboard printed on wallpaper. The figurines purchased in flea markets seem to be 3D versions of mannerist paintings such as that of Watteau. His painting captured gestures coyly in a lush decorative style which was seemingly both a confirmation and ironization of social situations. The issues and artifacts presented in this exhibition are superficially frivolous. It rips open our guts and shows up pink insides while for some, it is what they have been waiting for their whole lives. It is an irony, an intention of evil, and justification of human nature all rolled into one. The bringing together of these artists is not only an attempt at forging new interpretations of the sweet-sob tales of loss and solitude, but also an opening of a tin-box of fictional narratives and fleeting shades of love. While the relatable is not to be subverted, I hope this pipettes a drop of nectar where you thought there were no taste buds. She talks of “the hostility of the market” in wanting to know intentions and preconceived notions, but it is in the impasses, the blind procedures, the happy accidents, the time wasted, the unhappy discoveries, the useless moves, and of always knowing what was intended even if it doesn’t manifest, that a potential lies. The show tries to articulate these ideas as a hyphenated imaginary—an imaginary that like the saying entre chien et loup (between dog and wolf) is located in not knowing the exact nature of what one sees or experiences. Here, the hyphens are located within the conditions of a home—not one that alludes to the nostalgia or the emotion of a ‘Home Sweet Home’ but instead of the tedium of isolation, of it being cannibalistic, of its sentience, of the uncanny.
